Clara Mukisa is a visionary leader, intersectional feminist, and dedicated human rights advocate committed to advancing the rights and dignity of transgender and gender-diverse people. As a transgender woman navigating the complex socio-political landscape of Africa, Clara has emerged as a powerful voice for inclusion, gender equity, social justice, and the rights of marginalized communities, particularly transgender and gender-diverse persons.
Clara is a member and Board Member of Tranz Bureau Initiatives Uganda (TBIU), where she provides strategic oversight and contributes to organizational governance while representing the interests and perspectives of transgender members. Her areas of expertise include policy advocacy, organizational development, gender justice, economic empowerment, and inclusive governance. She is a strong believer in collaborative leadership and governance, recognizing the importance of building meaningful partnerships to advance sustainable development, equality, and social justice.
In addition to her work with TBIU, Clara works with Positive People Initiative, an organization advocating for the rights and well-being of transgender persons living with or affected by HIV. Through this work, she contributes to efforts aimed at strengthening access to rights, dignity, inclusion, and support for transgender communities affected by HIV.
Clara also serves as the Deputy Coordinator of the African Chambers of Women’s NGOs in Uganda, where she plays a pivotal role in connecting grassroots activism with high-level policy advocacy. In this capacity, she works to strengthen the collective voice, collaboration, and influence of women’s organizations across Uganda. Her leadership is grounded in the conviction that the feminist movement must be inclusive and representative of the diverse experiences of all women, including transgender and gender-diverse women.
Throughout her career, Clara has remained steadfast in her mission to create societies and spaces where transgender and gender-diverse people can thrive, rather than merely survive. Her work is rooted in the belief that African feminism must be inclusive, bold, transformative, and grounded in the lived experiences of marginalized communities.
Through advocacy, leadership, and movement-building, Clara continues to challenge systemic barriers, amplify the voices of underrepresented communities, and advocate for a future in which every person can live with dignity, equality, safety, and respect for their identity and human rights.
