Beyonce Karungi

Biography

Beyonce Karungi is the Founder and Executive Director of Tranz Bureau Initiatives Uganda (TBIU), established in 2011 to advance the recognition, respect, protection, and empowerment of transgender women and transgender sex workers in Uganda. As a trans woman and activist, Beyonce has been instrumental in creating a community-led platform where transgender women can speak out, advocate for their rights, and participate meaningfully in Uganda’s gender emancipation and feminist movements. Under her leadership, TBIU has pursued legal and policy advocacy, economic empowerment, access to health services, and institutional strengthening. The organization has also achieved important advocacy milestones, including influencing policymakers toward greater inclusion of trans women in national documents. Her leadership continues to center dignity, equality, human rights, and a society free from discrimination and criminalization.
